Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders
Should I be Feeling this way?
Often times in the throws of the new motherhood you may think ‘is this normal?’ You also may start to ‘should’ yourself. I should be enjoying pregnancy. I should be like other moms. I should be grateful that I had a good birth. I should be happy I have the baby I worked so hard for. And today’s world can be no picnic for moms—but don’t fear there is no mommy shaming here.
Postpartum Support International reports that “perinatal and postpartum mood disorders occur in approximately 20% of women and symptoms can occur anytime during pregnancy and in the first 12 months after birth. Although the term “postpartum depression” is most often used, there are actually several forms of illness that women may experience, such as, depression, anxiety, OCD, post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder and psychosis.”
Good news in all this— there are effective and researched treatments options to help you feel like you again and getting back to the great mom you are destined to be.
